DI CRAWFORD
Di Crawford was born in 1949 and attended art school in Perth in the mid-1960s. She then relocated to Melbourne and is now based at Cape Schanck. She has exhibited in numerous joint and 12 solo exhibitions in Western Australia and Victoria. In her early work Di pioneered an exciting thread-work style incorporating vibrant colour and florid re-imaginings of nature.
More recently she has transitioned to acrylic on canvas and paper and the painting of acrylic on mannequins. Her evocative style combines hypnotic geometric backdrops alongside figurative wildlife foregrounds. These geometric backgrounds reflect Di placing an imaginative microscope on nature and the patterns that emerge. Her love for nature and its rich colours is a driving force in her work. Her works often illuminate a mysterious path between ornithological documentation and magical realism.
The National Trust of Australia chose four of Di’s early thread work pieces for inclusion in its 2006 and 2007 diaries. In 2015 Di was chosen as one of nine female artists to exhibit in the Outstanding Women Artists exhibition (Media House Gallery, Melbourne, Victoria).
In 2015 along with 100 Australian artists, Di was asked to submit two works to the Luciano Benetton Collection Imago Mundi Project’s Australian Collection: ‘Looking Down Under: Contemporary Artists from Australia‘ as part of the Venice Biennale.
